Meniere’s Disease

What is Meniere’s Disease?

Every year nearly 45,000 individuals are diagnosed with a condition called Meniere’s Disease. Patients who are experiencing a complex of ear related issues may take a whole year to arrive at a proper diagnosis. Meniere’s disease symptoms range from mild to severe and occur in combinations, including:

  •  Episodes of vertigo
  •  Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
  •  Progressive hearing loss
  •  Fullness or Pressure in the ear

The combination and severity of Meniere’s disease symptoms are variable depending on the individual, and current treatment recommendations are mainly palliative rather than curative. Understanding key factors influencing Meniere’s symptoms is essential for addressing root cause issues and obtaining optimal improvement.

Blair Chiropractic and Meniere’s Disease

Currently there is no consensus on the cause of Meniere´s disease. However, a Blair Chiropractor in Michigan, by the name of Dr. Michael Burcon has a theory. Dr. Burcon, an expert on this condition and has spoken at every International Meniere’s Disease Symposium over the last decade. Through his research institute he has found that many Meniere´s suffers have had a trauma to the upper neck or head an average of 15 years prior to the onset of symptoms. The trauma disrupts the stabilizing structures between the head and neck causing an Upper Cervical Vertebral Misalignment, which can disrupt cranial circulation and nerve function slowly over time.

This explains why it may take so long for the symptoms to appear after the original trauma. Another factor that can obscure proper diagnosis is that supine MRI machines generally do not show the entirety of the problem. Dr. Burcon along with other specialists suggest that the imaging be performed in the upright weight bearing position. With a correct and complete understanding of the specific issues in each case, the Blair Chiropractor can create a custom-tailored plan of care to meet the necessities of the patient. Thousands of people diagnosed with Meniere´s disease have shown improvement after undergoing an intensive period of Blair Chiropractic care.
